Oberheim OB-6 – Twin of the Prophet-6 (?)

Malekko produces the Roland System-500 Modules, DSI builds the new Oberheim OB-6 … times are changing! Hidden in a Prophet-6 chassis, the OB-6 features a classic vintage sound architecture: SEM-VCOs and SEM-VCFs, coupled with those classic envelopes and the classic Oberheim PAN SPREAD Output …

This is an amalgamation of SEM (basic sound architecture), OB-X (X-Mod), OB-Xa/8 (panel layout) and new features (such as aftertouch, velocity, sequencer, effects, etc.).

The VCOs offer a mixture of SEM and OB features …

… as well as the VCF (the full/half filter tracking reminds us of the OB-8) …

… each of the classic envelopes has an extra velocity knob … and then there’s PAN SPREAD …

… the performance section to the left looks a little limited (compared with the OB-8, e.g.) but that’s not true, of course … (there “is” an arpegggiator and a sequencer …)

… so this is the Prophet-6′ twin …

“The OB-6 is a once-in-a-lifetime collaboration between the two most influential designers in poly synth history, Dave Smith and Tom Oberheim. The OB-6 takes the classic bold Tom Oberheim sound — with its true voltage-controlled oscillators, 2-pole filter, and amplifiers — and adds modern enhancements such as studio-quality effects, a polyphonic step sequencer, an arpeggiator, and more.” (DSI)
